The Foundation's project on the arts, culture and society exists to ensure public debate about the global, economic and societal forces affecting the arts.

The foundation sponsors a series of papers exploring the rise of economic and cultural globalizations and the way in which art institutions have accommodated the phenomenon. To date, twelve papers in the series have been published: "A Global Culture?" by David Rieff, a fellow of the Institute of the Humanities, New York University; "Global Culture and the American Cosmos" by Orlando Patterson, John Cowles Professor of Sociology at Harvard University; "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" by Robert Storr, a curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, New York; "Resisting the Dangerous Journey: The Crisis of Journalistic Criticism" and "Convenience and Process: Private versus Public Arts Funding" by former New York Times art critic Michael Brenson; "Coming of Age with the Muses: Change in the Age of Multiculturalism" by Susana Torruella Leval, director of El Museo del Barrio in New York; "A Democracy of Voices: Free Expression in the U.S." by Nan Levinson, a freelance writer and instructor at Tufts University; "INDECENCY: The Ongoing American Debate Over Sex, Children, Free Speech, and Dirty Words" by lawyer and author Marjorie Heins; "Created Commons" by Lewis Hyde, author and Luce Professor of Art & Politics at Kenyon College; "A New Commitment: To Artists, Creativity, and Freedom of Expression in the 21st Century" by Archibald Gillies, President of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.; "The 1960s in Bamako: Malick Sidibé and James Brown" by Manthia Diawara; and, "Where the Green Ants Dream: Aspects of Community in Six Parts" by Carol Becker.

As well, in 1995, the foundation joined with eight others to establish a Center for Arts and Culture in Washington, DC, to encourage research on cultural issues and to support related public policy initiatives.
